Recently I’ve been throwing my camera around at some concerts here in Tokyo. Been having a blast filming, while at the same time enjoying some great music. Shooting live performances is still a pretty new thing to me, but I finally feel like recently I’ve been getting the hang of things.

I’d like to take some time to introduce my good friend Yuji’s band, MU-STAR GROUP. An up-and-coming band in the heart of Tokyo, they are one of the newest additions to the fantastic Kakubarhythm (カクバリズム）label. Alongside other bands such as Your Song Is Good and Sakerock , MU-STARS are walking in the footsteps of some really talented and inspiring Japanese bands. Their music brings a fresh new sound to the label, featuring 2 DJ’s, a live drummer, and a VJ in the back. While at first the music definitely had more of a hip-hop influence, recently I’m not sure I can put my finger on what kind of genre MU-STARS actually fits into. In no way however is that a bad thing. Through the mix of breakbeats with the live bass and creative visual backgrounds projected throughout concerts, the music becomes more of a a visual and audio experience wrapped up in a nice package.

A few weekends ago I had the opportunity to help film a PV, shooting a little video and stills during the production. Was a sweet experience all around, and I can’t wait to help out the guys more in the future. Here are a few shots from the filming, as well as the final product up on Youtube. Anyways, I just thought I should write a bit about how truly amazing the photography community is. A no-name kid who dreams of shooting big can come in and discuss with industry professionals. It was really awesome to meet Matt Brush there as well. He does sweet action sports stuff. And also spent about an hour talking with J.J Wright. Is it weird that all these guys come from graphic design backgrounds? Hahahah. There are probably a million ways to get where you want to be; surrounding yourself with people that want to help you get there is probably one of the best ways though.

Lastly, I think there are some photographically inclined peeps that follow our blog; so if you have any questions about anything that you think we can help with- just ask. Maybe you have an idea that you think would look good photographed but don’t know where to start? Just say the word and I’ll do my best to help you out. Or you’re just starting and want to know what P, A, S, M on your camera mean? You want to try shooting film but don’t know where to start? If you’re within my distance I’ll lend you a camera and some film so you can shoot it up! We’re just people that do what we love.
